Summer Internship Program

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP), in conjunction with the Foundation for Managed Care Pharmacy, and under the auspices of Pfizer Inc, has made available twelve managed care internships for the summer of 2008. The goal of the program is to enhance a student’s awareness of career options in managed care pharmacy practice settings or within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) by direct hands-on involvement. Ten managed care organizations and two VA medical centers will each host an intern for this program.

Following a competitive selection procedss, students chosen for the program will spend nine weeks at a leading managed care organization or Veterans Affairs Medical Center under the supervision of pharmacist preceptors. While on site, the interns will be involved in the daily activities of the organization. In addition, they will work with their preceptors to complete a project related to improving the quality of pharmaceutical care in managed care pharmacy practice. The project results will be converted into poster format, and will be exhibited at AMCP's Educational Conference in October of the internship year.

In addition to the rotation at the practice site, the students will spend one week with a Pfizer Inc Medical Outcomes Specialist (MOS) learning how the pharmaceutical industry interacts with managed care pharmacy.

Upon completion of the site rotation, the interns will spend one week at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy in Alexandria, VA.

To be eligible for the AMCP/FMCP/Pfizer Managed Care Pharmacy Summer Internship Program, a student must be enrolled full-time in an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy during the 2008-2009 school year, with anticipated graduation in 2010 or 2011 with a PharmD degree. Three letters of reference must be supplied with each application, one from the dean of the school, one from a faculty member and one from a non-relative pharmacist. The internship must be completed within a ten-week period between May and August 2009.

Applications and letters of reference must be postmarked by February 2, 2009

The interns will be paid a stipend, including housing, travel and other expenses, and will attend AMCP's 2009 Educational Conference in San Antonio, TX
